About Front Page Extensions
Front Page Extensions are a necessary evil of
server side includes on an html website. They are a
bit finicky and they do tend to break when you FTP
so get used to fixing this problem.
Why use them if they are a
problem? Read This...
When you look at your website in a browser, it
should have a header, linkbar, and main menu. You
should also see your ads if you are viewing a
site that has ads installed. If any of
these parts are missing, first refresh your browser.
If that doesn't bring the whole site up, you
probably have broken extensions.
How To Fix Broken Front Page Extensions:
You will need to open your cpanel for your
domain. This is easy... Type the following in a new
browser tab:
http://www.your-domain-name.com/cpanel and
hit Enter on your keyboard.
Of course you will change your-domain-name.com to
your real domain.
You will get a pop up window that will ask you
for your username and password. This is the username
and password for your hosting account.
Once you are in your cpanel, you will see these
icons:

Click on the icon that says FrontPage
Extensions. Now you will see this:

Don't worry about the warning in this area, it is
standard on all servers. We know what we are telling
you is safe and will not mess anything up. We do
this all the time. Follow our instructions and you
will be fine.
Click on the Uninstall Extensions button. Wait
for your extensions to uninstall. Then click Go
Back.
Click on Clean Up Old Extensions. Go Back.
Click on Install Extensions. Go Back
Check your live site online and see if it is
fixed. Make sure you refresh your browser.
If this didn't fix the problem, Click on Install
Extensions a second time. We don't know why but
sometimes it takes two tries. ???
Usually this will fix things right away. Refresh
your site in your browser and see if it's working
now. If not, wait for about 15 minutes and refresh
your browser again.
That should take care of it. If you are still
having problems, you will have to repeat the entire
process starting with Uninstall Extensions. It
usually will work the first time and rarely takes
more effort than that. For some odd reason,
FrontPage Extensions don't always follow the rules
and you will need to do this twice. Again, we don't
know why we just know this to be fact.
You will not have this problem every time you FTP
to your domain. You can go for weeks or even months
without encountering this problem. Then all of a
sudden, one day, you have to fix your extensions
again.
It's not a big deal and usually takes less than 5
minutes. Just chalk it up to "That's Life" and move
on. |
